To turn a yearly salary into an hourly wage, divide it by the hours you work in a year, your hours per week times the weeks per year. For a standard full-time job that is 2,080 hours.

So a $52,000 salary is $25 an hour. Flip it around with the free hourly wage calculator, which converts in either direction and shows weekly, monthly, and annual figures.

The formula

hourly = annual salary / (hours per week x weeks per year)
annual = hourly x hours per week x weeks per year

The standard assumption is 40 hours a week over 52 weeks, which is 2,080 hours a year. To convert an hourly rate the other way, just multiply: $30 an hour full-time is $30 x 2,080 = $62,400.

Common salary-to-hourly conversions

Annual salaryHourly (full-time)
$40,000$19.23
$52,000$25.00
$75,000$36.06
$100,000$48.08

These use 2,080 hours. If you work more or fewer hours, your true hourly rate shifts, which is why two people on the same salary can earn very different amounts per hour.

Mind the hours (and the tax)

  • Unpaid time off lowers your paid weeks; drop the weeks-per-year figure to match.
  • Salaried roles that routinely run past 40 hours have a lower real hourly rate than the headline.
  • This is gross pay. Your take-home is lower after tax, so check a paycheck calculator for net figures.
