How to convert salary to an hourly wage

To turn a yearly salary into an hourly rate, divide it by the number of hours you work in a year: your hours per week times the weeks you work per year. A $52,000 salary at 40 hours a week over 52 weeks works out to 2,080 hours, or $25 an hour.

hourly = annual salary / (hours per week x weeks per year)

Hours and weeks matter

Two people on the same salary can have very different hourly rates if one works more hours. If you take unpaid leave, drop the weeks-per-year figure to reflect the weeks you are actually paid. Salaried roles often work more than the nominal hours, which quietly lowers the real hourly rate.

Gross, not take-home

This converts gross pay. Your take-home is lower after income tax and other withholdings. To see what actually lands in your account, use a state paycheck calculator.

How this is calculated

Converts between hourly, weekly, monthly, and annual pay using the hours per week and weeks per year you enter (annual equals hourly times hours per week times weeks per year). Results are gross pay, before taxes and deductions.
